Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Model

The testosterone propionate (TP)-induced BPH rat model is widely used in research due to its simple operation.

Model Name
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Model
Animal Strains
Sprague-Dawley (SD) Rats

Model Description

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men. The incidence rate increases with age, reaching 69.2% in men over 80 years old.

Currently, BPH models used in in vivo studies include xenograft models, transgenic mouse models, hormone-induced models, and spontaneous models (chimpanzee/dog). Among these, the testosterone propionate (TP)-induced BPH rat model is widely used in research due to its simple operation.

Modeling Methods

The model is established by subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate 50 mg/kg twice a week, for 4 weeks.

Less than 28 days, the rats leading to changes in body weight and multiple organ indices, with elevated kidney indices and adverse effects on renal function.

Testing items

  • General observation
  • Renal function test
  • Prostate tissue histopathology analysis
