Model Description

Carrageenan, a sulfated polysaccharide derived from red algae, is a gold-standard inducer for chronic thrombosis research. Our mouse tail thrombosis model leverages carrageenan’s unique properties to achieve:

  • Controlled thrombogenesis: Progressive fibrin deposition over 6-10 days
  • Non-invasive monitoring: Visible tail darkening (≥2mm "black tail" length as endpoint)

Modeling Protocol —— 6-Day Carrageenan Induction

1. Group Design: 

  • Control Group: Daily intraperitoneal (i.p.) saline (0.01 mL/g)
  • Model Group: Daily i.p. 0.06% carrageenan (0.01 mL/g)

2. Procedure:

Days 1-6: Inject carrageenan at 20±1°C ambient temperature

Terminal Criteria:

1Immediate sacrifice upon black tail appearance (thrombus formation)

2Continue injections until Day 10 for non-responders
